Go Faster- the Graphic Design of Racing Cars.

You'd never guess it, but these big toys for big boys were at the height of their design during the 1970s – by sheer chance. Mechanics and team members – not designers or marketing strategists – adorned racecars with all of those flashy stripes, logos, numbers and colors prevalent at any Formula 1 race today. A lovely book cataloguing soem of the era's greatest.

The Wonderfully Weird Photography of Jan Kempenaers

Doing the rounds at the moment are these images by Jan Kempenaers from his series called “Spomenik: The End of History”. Although it’s almost hard to believe, these bizarre, massive structures are real, they are all apparently monuments erected by the communist regime in former Yugoslavia. More info here.More Pix

OLED Lumiblades

Couple of really nice pieces commisioned by Phillips to show off thier Lumiblade technology. The Lumiblade is an ultra thin OLED light source typically used in mobile phone and laptops screens. As the development of OLEDs progress we're set to see them replace LED's as the main method for general lighting in the not to distant future. Exciting stuff.

UVA's Speed of Light

UVA were commissioned by Virgin Media to create 'an immersive light installation celebrating 10 years of broadband in the UK'. Speed of Light will be a series of experimental light works flowing through the labyrinthine spaces of the Bargehouse on the South Bank. Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in a massive network of laser sculptures, built on the idea of speed being light, and light being data. The remaining three documentary videos are here, here & here.

Yet again some amazingly beautiful work from the boys and girls at UVA which mixes audio and light to produce some truly stunning displays. Crisp.

Turmkunst 2010

This month the “Bierpinsel” tower on the Schloßstraße in Steglitz in Berlin is undergoing a transformation to become the “Turmkunst” (art tower) – an open air art gallery in the centre of the German Capital.

A familiar site to locals and visitors to the city, the “Beer Brush” (named after the opening event in 1976 where free beer was given to everyone who joined the public party” has been home to several restaurants offering panoramic views of Berlin. However it has been closed for a while now and is currently being renovated to be reopened as a home for events and conventions. The new owners are giving it a new lease of life by turning the exterior of the modernist masterpiece into a canvas for some of the world’s best known street artists.

............Cause they aaaarrgh.

Creative directed by Spike jones, VBS is quickly becoming the best place to find independent journalistic film making online with an extremely wide range of topics. This piece on Pirate Radio in London is particularly interesting. Watch out for the offshore Sea Forts that look like something from Lebbeus Woods sketch books. Online film broadcasting gets serious. See where they're coming from here.
