Hidden Radio

The Hidden Radio is a beautiful example of design pared down to its core. Embodying a next to nothing fusion of form and function, all the controls for this radio are seamlessly built into its structure. No knobs, sliders, dials or screens are visible. Instead, by moving the lid up, volume is increased, and by turning it, the user can tune in radio stations. A small LED light indicates signal strength.

I met the Walrus

In 1969, a 14-year-old Beatle fanatic named Jerry Levitan, armed with a reel-to-reel tape deck, snuck into John Lennon's hotel room in Toronto and convinced John to do an interview about peace. 38 years later, Jerry has produced a film about it. Using the original interview recording as the soundtrack, director Josh Raskin has woven a visual narrative which tenderly romances Lennon's every word in a cascading flood of multipronged animation. Raskin marries the terrifyingly genius pen work of James Braithwaite with masterful digital illustration by Alex Kurina, resulting in a spell-binding vessel for Lennon's boundless wit, and timeless message. Acadamy award nominee for best animated short film 2008.

Board of beauty

the surfboard’s frame is cut from 16.6 square feet of cardboard and covered in transparent fiberglass

image © brian klutch

mike sheldrake surfer and former web programmer has designed a cardboard surfboard,

using 3d modelling software. each cardboard slat is cut using a computer controlled saw.

when each slat is snapped together the slats form hexagonal and triangular patterns,

giving the board its structural strength. to make the board waterproof sheldrake used the

same methods used for traditional surfboards, wrapping it in fibreglass cloth hardened with

epoxy resin. sheldrake is still experimenting with materials, to make the board lighter before

he puts into manufacture.

KAREN MILLEN JORDAN OPEN

New KM store opened in Jordan last week.

Transitions

Down at the Truman Brewery right next door to LBI's front door there is a temporary lighting exhibit (very temp- 2 days long!)
which is showcasing 8 containers filled with lighting concepts by celebrated world designers. I popped along last night and it is really interesting, especially the LED technology involved. It is open for today only and is worth a look and you can also pop your head in the LBI reception and take a look at that too.

Enjoy. Beam me up. Scottie

a minimalist installation by realities:united that acts as a light sign, an information carrier, and a light source at the same time. 2 digits of 7-segment display, formed using industrial fluorescent tubes, are suspended from the ceiling. as a "display", the installation is used to show the current time in minutes.
