LA Coffee Shop

Newspaper Wood

Kranthout ("newspaper wood" in Dutch) is a new product that has been developed by Mieke Meijer for design company vij5 (here is a [PDF] of their design). As the name suggests, this is 'wood' made from newspaper. The individual pages are rolled together using a specially developed machine to produce tabloid sized 'logs', which can then be milled into planks, drilled and sanded just as real wood might. Neatly, the kranthout also replicates the grain of wood, with streaks of text or color photographs revealed in the new planks when it is cut.

Martin Bircher's "Type Case"

Lovely little installation called "Type Case". It's a low-resolution display with 125 rectangular pixels of different sizes. These are formed from the reflecting light of digitally controlled LEDs, embedded in each section of a European printers' type case. Due to the standardized fragmentation of its compartments, the density of visual information is decreased towards the objects' centre. Viewed close by, it is nearly impossible to recognize more than a flicker – however after moving some distance away, it becomes distinguishable, that the lights and shadows give a representation of the latest headlines. Can see it working beautifully as either signage or a feature wall? Read more here.

Yes (Hugo) Boss...New Hong Kong Store

This weekend saw the launch of a new Brinkworth retail concept store for Hugo Boss Orange, in Hong Kong’s premier retail mall, IFC. A dramatic mall façade, constructed entirely of glazed, open steel cube-work, applies a matrix that follows through the store, alluding to the precision of draughtsman’s paper and providing a gridded backdrop to the wall system. This open meshwork is reflected in the centrepiece denim display, a suspended tower of municipal-style lockers, constructed from copper and dramatically illuminated from within. (Well done Simon and Steve...)

Nice....

Royal Observatory @ Herstmonceux

Worth a visit, the Royal Observatory @ Herstmonceux was designed by an architect that formally designed cruise liners. The influences are evident in overall style of the place, including the use of materials favoured by the Admiralty at the time, (lots of mahogany, and dreadnought grey paint etc.) The telescopes are amazing feats of basic engineering and there is an old, but really interesting Science Museum style indoor exhibit area.
