Britain's reggae community burned their illusions a long time ago but right across the spectrum there is wave of shock at the way David Emmanuel, best known as Smiley Culture, died from "self-inflicted" stab wounds during a police raid on his home in Surrey on Tuesday. Back in 1984, Smiley Culture bounced into the nation's consciousness with Cockney Translation and its Top 20 follow up Police Officer – a graphic tale of how he was arrested for possession of "ganja", but evaded prosecution when recognised as the reggae artist who did "the Cockney Translator".
With news of a whole host of premium brands on their way it's a little unsurprising to see A.P.C rock up on our door step on Redchurch Street. What is surprising is how quietly they have gone about it. The unassuming little store has some lovely details in ply but it does kind of feel like a temporary store (which we were assured it wasn't). Sceptics among you might view this light touch as a quick and inexpensive way of muscling in on the growing (mainstream) credibility of the area. Although, maybe this represent's the evolution of the 'pop-up' shop - an inexpensive and semi permanent fit out. I'll leave it to Davidoff to come up with a catchy new name for it. In the mean time, where's my credit card...?
